5 (Easy + Inexpensive) ways to invest in your health

If you’ve paid any attention to the stock market lately, you might be thinking a lot about investments. But today, I want to talk about an investment that consistently yields the highest returns: your health.
Life is full of uncertainties, things we simply can't control. But the lifestyle choices we make today have a powerful impact on our future well-being. Investing in our well-being can seriously impact how we feel now, but also contributes to aging with more energy, independence, and precious time with our loved ones – time which is priceless and can be compromised by conditions like heart disease, diabetes type 2 and chronic pain.
As we navigate life, time becomes increasingly valuable and so much of it hinges upon our health. For those of us balancing work and life, investing in our health translates to greater productivity, fewer sick days, and a reduced likelihood of facing hefty medical bills down the road. It's encouraging to see more companies recognizing this, as I’ve had a rise in hosting corporate wellness events and even had companies reimbursing their employees for joining our classes!
So, how can you invest in this incredible asset? Does it require a huge chunk of your time and money?! Forget expensive wellness retreats and private chefs for a moment.Let's look at some accessible ways to build your health portfolio:
Know Your Family Health History: Having a (free!) chat with relatives about your family health history can be crucial in understanding genetic and environmental predispositions and help you make informed choices to mitigate risks. Additionally, taking advantage of health screening tools available such as blood pressure checks at pharmacies or being sure to schedule annual checkups can both be vital in disease prevention.
Move Your Body Regularly: A walk soaking in the sights of Taipei, some energizing bodyweight exercises (squats and planks require no equipment), or exploring the wealth of free fitness videos online (including some fun routines on my channel!) are all fantastic starting points. And for a convenient and joyful way to move, my all-access Zumba package lets you dance with me anytime, working out to just around NT$40/ $1.22 USD a day!
Nourish Your Body: Eating healthy doesn't have to break the bank! Simple, nutritious meals built around whole grains, seasonal fresh or frozen veggies (often more affordable!), and budget-friendly proteins like beans can be quick to prepare. Plus, you'll know exactly what you're eating and save on those frequent takeout costs.
Manage Your Stress: Stress takes a toll on both mind and body. Regularly carving out even a few minutes for mindful breathing, meditation, prayer, or journaling can significantly boost your well-being – and it's free! Or if you are like me and breaking a sweat helps relieve stress, join me in Taipei for class!
Prioritize Rest: Quality sleep is fundamental for everything from cognitive function to a strong immune system, especially as we navigate our busy lives. Simple, free habits like turning off screens 30 minutes before you sleep or keeping your phone out of bed can make a big difference!
It's easy to let the demands of work, family, and life push our own well-being down the priority list. But as the Confucian saying goes: "A healthy man wants a thousand things, a sick man only wants one." So, while so much in life feels out of our hands, today holds small opportunities to invest in your health – an investment that will pay dividends you'll cherish for years to come!
Here's to making those small, powerful deposits in our well-being today!
Keep moving!
xx,
Katie
