Move for life
Creaky bones, wild, white, wiry hair, and the energy of a zombie.
Am I describing Halloween or what society fears life is like past our “prime"-- ill, injury-prone, and immobile?
Well certainly with Halloween coming on Thursday and our themed classes this week, I've got all things spooky and frightening on the brain!
But I'm also reminded of the things that truly strike fear in hearts the most-- namely our wellbeing and that of those we love. In fact, according to a survey from Chapman University, worry about our loved ones' health is the second greatest fear for Americans.
While it's true that the risks for conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, and dementia increase with age, growing older doesn't mean all doom and gloom. In her interview on healthy aging in Columbia Magazine , Dean Linda P. Fried, says "Exercise is the closest thing we’ve found to a magic pill for combating the effects of aging. That’s because it works on every physiological system and keeps your entire body fine-tuned. It even stimulates your brain and helps to prevent cognitive decline."
The best way to combat fears around health, injuries and growing older then may just be to get moving. No matter what age we or our loved ones are, there are benefits to exercise-- and importantly, it is never too late to start! Each of us can reap the rewards of improving cardiac function, muscle strength, mobility, and balance so as to live more robust, independent and vivacious lives.
This month I want to help you do just that with my November On-Demand Zumba Package that includes my very first 25 minute Zumba Gold class targeted to older folks, beginners, and those with physical limitations. You can invite someone whose health you care about to join you for a fun, short, and effective workout at home! Choose from 20 other classes of various length and levels throughout the month to keep inspired to move!
It's impossible for us to totally control what happens to us and our loved ones. Having fears doesn't mean we have to throw up our hands and give up, though. We can take care of our bodies with the hope that our investment in care can lead us to living long, healthy lives, but also knowing that just taking care of ourselves in the present is a gift that makes life more enjoyable NOW.
Don't forget that weather willing, we still have one more Halloween party class on October 31st at TDC! Wear a costume, something black or orange and come shake the scaries away!
Keep moving!
xx,
Katie
