My Guide to Mid-Year Reflection
2023 is already halfway over— 😱!! And I’ve only just started to catch myself when I write “2022” for the date on most things 😅. So far, it’s been a year that feels far more normal than the past few. I’m seeing more familiar faces back in class since the pandemic has eased, visiting students and instructors are coming back to Taipei, and new clients are beginning their own journeys of health and confidence in dance.
As kids, halfway through any school year most of us had midterm exams. In many jobs, bosses and managers give mid-year reports on the performance of the company or employees. Why? To identify areas of weaknesses and strengths, and determine the best paths forward for the remainder of the year.
Likewise, this is the perfect time to check in with yourself to see how your actions so far in 2023 are aligning with your intentions for the year— and devising a plan for making the most of the next six months!
Your Mid- Year Reflection Guide.
1. Grab a pen and paper or journal.
2. Take a few minutes to think back to January 1, 2023. Use the following questions as a guide for your writing.
What goals and intentions did I have for myself at the beginning of the year?
How did I envision my ideal day or week?
How did I want to feel in categories such as my relationships, health , career, or finances?
3. Identify big and small wins from the past six months.
What am I proud of myself for?
What did I surprise myself by being able to do this year?
What am I grateful for happening so far this year?
4. Identify areas that were roadblocks when it came to hitting goals.
What, if anything, held me back from being able to meet or be on the way to reaching my goals?
Are there any goals from the beginning of the year that no longer feel important to me or worth pursuing?
Would making adjustments to my goals such as lowering my expectations make them more reachable?
5. List the lessons you’ve learned and make a SMART plan for the next 6 months.
What patterns in my behavior can I see when I review the first half of the year? ( When I do or feel _____, then I usually do or feel _______).
In what moments did I feel most successful and confident or when did I feel most disheartened?
Considering what I’ve learned about myself, how can I readjust my goals and keep them SMART ( Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time- bound).
Remember, there’s no teacher to give you an A+ or boss to fire you or give you a raise when it comes to doing a mid-year check in. Just like we use a mirror to view our reflections, a mid-year reflection is to gain clarity of yourself for YOU. What might it still be possible to achieve in 2023, and how might you feel when you look back six months from now?
Happy Reflecting!
xx,
Katie
