Go From Zumba-Curious to zumba lover!
Around this time of year, I always see a few fresh faces popping into classes and newbies sliding into my DMs to test the waters.
So many people have heard of Zumba (way to go, Zumba brand marketing!), but their questions most often boil down to just one: Is Zumba right for me?!
You know me, it was love at first salsa step all those years ago, but even I had reservations about jumping into a jam-packed class led by a Chinese speaking instructor with what seemed like an army of perfectly synchronised participants. Plus, back then exercise was still something I considered punishment for cheat meals or what I SHOULD be doing, rather than a part of my lifestyle that I love.
So, trust, I know there’s a lot of mental gymanstics, er cha-cha-cha-ing, that happens before even lacing up the sneakers to hit the dance floor.
Are any of these thoughts holding you back from giving Zumba a try? Check out some of the concerns I most often hear from the Zumba-curious out there!
I have two left feet. Part of what makes Zumba, Zumba, is that it’s for people of all abilities and levels. Dance moves repeat within songs, starting simply and progressing as we go. I usually tell students to stick with it for 3 classes in order to get that “a-ha!” moment when the brain and body start to click! And even then, we all, especially myself, make missteps. In Zumba we say there aren’t any mistakes, only unexpected solos!
I can never stick with an exercise routine. The community and fun aspects of Zumba are no doubt the reasons why you heard the word “Zumba” in the first place. The music is HAPPY, the people are FRIENDLY, and the vibe is a PARTY. It doesn’t feel so much like working out, as it does having this feel-good time for yourself to destress and embrace freedom amongst other like-minded people. Exercise goes from being something you thought you SHOULD do, to something you can’t want to GIVE yourself.
I’m in “bad” shape. Zumba can be modified to suit whatever your fitness level is. In every class there will be options for those who want to modify jumps, turns, or squats into less intense moves. If you are looking to start with shorter workouts, you can also try my On-Demand classes which range from 10 minutes to an hour. Start small and listen to your body as you progress!
I’m too embarrassed to have anyone see me work out. You may feel like all eyes are on you, but as the instructor I promise, eyes are on ME! Because the class is done with visual cues and hand gestures, no one pays much attention to how anyone else is dancing. For the extra shy, try dancing from home with my On-Demand classes while you build your confidence! Or for those who want extra special attention, you can reach out to see if we are a good match for creating your own private classes online, at home, or in the studio for you or your close friends.
I have a health condition/ previous injury. Before starting any new workout routine, it is always recommended to consult a physician first. After getting clearance to dance, keep yourself safe by staying hydrated, wearing supportive shoes, and listening to your body should you experience pain or discomfort during class.
Still not sure if Zumba is right for you? There’s no better way to see than giving it a try (or three for best results 🤩)! Put your worries to rest, share this with a friend who is on the fence about joining class, and join us on the dance floor!
Keep moving!
xx,
Katie
