building a strong foundation for your health journey
Last week, Typhoon Kong-rey hit Taiwan and brought a powerful reminder: even the biggest trees can fall if their roots aren’t strong enough. The once majestic banyan tree next to my apartment, with its sprawling branches and lush canopy, was uprooted by the relentless winds.
I was shocked and honestly, surprisingly saddened to see my (and the neighborhood birds’) favorite heart-shaped tree ripped from the ground. It was a stark reminder that beneath even impressive facades, strength and resilience are crucial.
Just like a tree, our own health and fitness journey requires a strong foundation. Focusing solely on outward appearances, comparisons to others, and external motivation can lead to inconsistent efforts, temporary results, and superficial changes.
And truthfully, this is exactly the kind of mentality I know myself and so many others had when we first got introduced to the idea of “being healthy” or that we should be exercising sometime in those insecure pre-teen years.
It’s taken years of continual practice and cultivation to feel more deeply rooted in my own health journey— and still, it’s an area that I know even now, will wilt or suffer if neglected.
Check out these three check-ins that help me keep me deeply rooted to my health foundation:
Dig deep: Connect to your “Why. ” What would greater health mean to you? What would more energy to face life look like for you? To spend quality time with loved ones? To live more independently in your later years?
Nurture Your Whole Self : Just as a tree needs nutrients, water, sunlight, and air, get to know your needs! Our bodies and minds require adequate nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management and social interactions. Which areas are you giving the most attention to? Which areas could use more nourishment?
Grow your Garden: Surround yourself with or seek out those who love to see you grow! Join our group classes to connect with like-minded people or dance with a family member at home to find support and motivation with those who encourage you to flourish!
Building a strong foundation in your health journey is the opposite of a quick fix, instant gratification, or fitness fad. Be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress, no matter how small!
And as always, I'm here to support your journey, both online and in person. Join me for our Zumba classes and let's cultivate a healthier, happier you!
Keep moving!
xx,
Katie
