What's Your September Strategy?






September is off to a sizzling start in Taipei! 



I don’t know about you, but the extreme heat has made some of my fall health habits more naturally fall back into place. Take drinking at least 2 liters of water a day for instance. Piece of cake with these temperatures. Getting out of bed twenty minutes earlier for less rushed mornings? Also much easier when the sun is so intense!



And of course other habits are a bit more difficult to restart, such as working up the energy after a full day to cook myself a healthy dinner, or stretching at night when I’d rather pass out in front of the TV. 



In the past decade that I’ve been focusing more on my health journey, the perceived wins or challenges always remind me: 



 1.) A healthy lifestyle IS A JOURNEY that you will always be working towards.



 2.) I am HUMAN and there’s no such thing as perfection for any of us.



 3.) There ARE strategies and tools that can help in adopting new health habits. 



Personally, the strategy that is most effective for me (and also most highly recommended overall) is S.M.A.R.T. goal making — specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound— as I’ve mentioned in numerous newsletters. 



Want to know how to use it for a fall goal? Describe in as much detail the what, why, in which way, how much, and when of your desired habit!



For example:



I want to lose weight. → I’m cutting out high calorie drinks in favor of water, unsweetened tea and coffee during the week.



I want to get in better shape. → I’m going to dance thirty minutes a day 5 times a week after work in my living room.



I want to be less stressed. → I will write down 3 things I’m grateful for each morning. 



I want to have a closer relationship with my loved one. → I’ll turn off all screens during meal times with my family. 



I want to get more rest. → I’m setting a timer for 10pm each night to put down my phone and start to get ready for bed.
