Beyond the ribbon: awareness and action

october is breast cancer awareness month

Every October, pink ribbons proudly pop up and charity events like Zumba's Party in Pink Parties are organized to help remind us that Breast Cancer Awareness Month is here. And understandably so -- breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, afflicting approximately 1 in 8 women.

So, it's likely that we ourselves, or someone in our family, workplace, or dancing next to us in Zumba class has been affected by breast cancer.

The hopeful news is that as awareness has increased, there has been more early detection and early treatment leading to favorable prognoses in a large percentage of cases.

This October we can take awareness one step further with real practical actions to support those affected, and prioritize our own health.

Schedule a mammogram: If you're 40 or older, make an appointment for a mammogram. I just recently learned that starting next year, Taiwan's health ministry will expand free breast screenings to women ages 40-75!

Know your family history:  Reach out to other female family members and broach the topic of health.  If you have a family history of breast cancer, talk to your doctor about increased screening recommendations.

Reach out to those affected: A simple message, card, or phone call can make a world of difference to someone facing health challenges.  Offer your support, listen, and help with practical tasks like running errands or preparing a healthy meal. Not sure what to do? Sometimes I make a spotify playlist of music I think someone might enjoy to lift their spirits!

Take a look at your lifestyle: Risk factors such as being a woman, your age, and family history are beyond your control, however lifestyle factors may also play a role in reducing your risk of breast cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight, having an active lifestyle by regularly exercising, limiting alcohol and quitting smoking all ways you may reduce your risks.

Let's make this October a month of awareness AND action. Grab a friend and support each other whether it’s in going for regular walks, attending a Zumba class together, or chatting over alcohol-free mocktails!

Sending some extra love to those in our community  battling breast cancer and health challenges of all kinds. 💕

This, and every month, is a great time for all of us to focus on our well-being. Together, let’s keep one another moving and motivated throughout our  health journeys!

Keep moving!

xx,

Katie
